Spartans Inch Closer To Postseason

Simley High School is beginning to see the end of the regular season.

The spring sports campaign pushed closer to its conclusion as Simley sports squads continued to jostle for preferred sectional seeding with contests book-ending the weekend.

Baseball: Simley Claims First Two Victories

The Simley baseball team claimed its first two wins of the season to close out last week, topping Henry Sibley by a 10-8 score for its initial Classic Suburban Conference victory on Thursday before topping St. Croix Lutheran 10-4 in a non-conference game on Friday.

The Spartans nearly made it three-straight on Monday, yet fell 1-0 at North St. Paul.

Offensively, Brody Schintz leads Simley with a .389 batting average, while Logan Busch is hitting .351 with the team's lone home run. The pair have split the pitching wins between them, with Busch posting a 2.80 earned run average that is bettered only by Anthony Poole's 2.06 ERA; Schintz and Busch are tied for the squad strikeout lead with 19 each, with Poole just behind at 18 K's.

Softball: Spartans Take Fifth At Becker Tournament

The Simley softball team took fifth place at the Becker Tournament on Saturday, going 1-2 in tourney play.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Spartans fell 6-5 to New Ulm in the opener, then defeated St. Cloud Apollo by a 14-4 score and topped Superior (Wis.) 8-6 in the fifth-place game. 

Simley also defeated Henry Sibley by a 4-1 count last Thursday and lost 13-0 to North St. Paul on Monday to put its record at 7-10 overall and 3-8 in the Classic Suburban.

Boys Lacrosse: Hill-Murray 17, Spartans 3

The Simley boys lacrosse team remained winless on the spring, dropping its seventh game in a 17-3 home loss to conference rival Hill-Murray on Saturday.

Zach Park, Kellen Asmundson and Joe Trenzeluk each scored one goal apiece in the defeat.

Boys Tennis: Spartans Split Versus St. Paul Teams

The Simley boys tennis team split its pair of contests against squads from St. Paul with a 4-3 loss to St. Paul Como Park on Friday, followed by a 6-1 defeat of St. Paul Central on Monday.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Spartans are currently 8-3 on the season.

Girls Golf: Simley Competes In Pair Of Meets

The Simley girls golf team competed in a pair of meets over the past five days, taking third in a Classic Suburban meet on Thursday and 11th in an invitational on Monday.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Spartans recorded a 416 to take third on Thursday at Highland National Golf Course, then posted a 486 at Oak Glen Golf Course on Monday in the Hill-Murray Invite.

Results from a scheduled meet involving the Simley boys golf team on Friday were not available.
