Spartans Open Soccer Sections With a 12-0 Rout

Myran scored three goals, while White and Atkins earned two each as the Simley High School boys opened the section soccer playoffs with an easy win.

An overmatched Community of Peace Academy proved to be just what the doctor ordered Tuesday for the Spartans soccer team, which struggled at the end of the regular season.

routed the visitors 12-0 Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Section 4A boys soccer sections.

The fourth-seeded Spartans (7-7-3 on the season) will host fifth-seeded St. Croix Lutheran (9-6-2) at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

St. Croix Lutheran beat Simley 2-0 in the last game of the regular season 2-0 on Oct. 8. The Crusaders advanced with a 1-0 win over St. Agnes Tuesday.

Simley had one tie and five losses in its final six games of the regular season, but was dominant Saturday against a Community of Peace team that came into the tournament with just a 0-2 record.

Junior attacker Zack Myran had a hat trick, while Tom Atkins and Dylan White scored two goals each to lead the Spartans offensively Tuesday. Other goals were put in by Malcolm Willie, Austin Monsrud, Mario Soto, Joe Fox and Brandon Kinkade.

“We were just getting ready for Saturday more than anything,” said Simley head coach Noel Quinn. “This team (St. Croix Lutheran) beat us last Saturday, so we get to get them again.”

The Spartans that took the field Tuesday evening each sprouted an all-black hairdo for the playoffs. Tuesday they didn’t come close to needing them. Saturday's game should be a hair closer.
