Sports Roundup: Basketball Teams, Wrestlers Start Seasons

Patch recaps the scores and highlights from last week's Simley High School sporting events.

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team took on Park High School on Friday, Dec. 2 in its first game of the season. , losing 45-41. Verneal Baxter scored 17 points to lead the Spartans. The Spartans' next game is against St. Paul Preparatory Academy on Tuesday.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball started off its season with a 56-26 win over Albert Lea. Individual statistics from the game were not available.

Dance Team

The Dance Team swept a conference meet at nearby Henry Sibley High School last Tuesday. Simley's Varsity Jazz and JV Jazz teams placed first of the eight teams participating in the meet.

Gymnastics

The Simley gymnastics Team placed fourth overall at the Simley High School invitational on Saturday. The team tallied 120.4 points against Henry Sibley High School, North High School and other opponents. Gymnast Sarah Birkelo took sixth place in the all-around competition.

Boys Hockey

The Simley boys hockey team overpowered St. Paul Academy by a score of 6-5 on Nov. 29. The game was the season opener for the Spartans. Simley outshot their foes 30-12, and Brandon Reitberger had a strong start to the season, notching four goals—including three in the third period and one in overtime.

Ben Rauschnot and Brandon Reitberger scored one goal apiece in , but the team was eventually defeated 5-2.

Girls Hockey

After tying Minnehaha Academy 3-3 last Tuesday night, the Spartans girls hockey team defeated Fergus Falls 3-2 in a game on Dec. 2. Individual statistics from the game were not available. The Spartans are now 2-2-1 on the season.

Wrestling

The Spartans wrestling team traveled north last week to Chisago Lakes for a varsity quadrangular. There, Simley defeated Hibbing 58-3, Chisago Lakes 42-18 and Park Center 62-0. The Spartans had a total of 16 pins, including one pin by Cody Hazelett 20 seconds into his match again Park Center foe Gavin Elsberry.
