Sports Roundup: Fall Sports Season Begins For Simley

Soccer, tennis teams commence 2011 campaigns.

The 2011 fall sports season has begun for Simley as the Spartans girls tennis and soccer squads commenced their campaigns last week, with several more teams to play their first contests over the next several days.

Boys Soccer

The Simley boys soccer team emerged from its first week of games without a loss as the Spartans went 2-0-1 in its initial three contests.

Following a 1-0 home win over non-conference opponent Hastings last Thursday, the Spartans officially claimed a win and a tie at the St. John's University Tournament over the weekend.

Simley shutout Rochester Century, 2-0, on Friday, then tied Blake 1-1 on Saturday.

Joe Trenzeluk leads the Spartans with two goals, with George Knowlton and Malcolm Willie accounting for one score apiece.

Simley plays at Tartan at 5 p.m. Wednesday, before returning home to take on St. Paul Humboldt at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Girls Soccer

The Simley girls soccer team opened its fall season with a win and two losses last week, sandwiching a 5-0 home victory over New Life Academy on Friday with road losses at South St. Paul (5-1) and Park (4-1) on Thursday and Saturday. For photos from the New Life game, .

Complete individual statistics were not available. The Spartans return to the pitch at 7 p.m. Tuesday against non-conference foe Hastings, then play at Classic Suburban Conference foe Henry Sibley at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Girls Tennis

The Simley girls tennis team began its season in fine form by means of a 6-1 win over Bloomington Kennedy last Tuesday and a 4-3 defeat of Rogers last Wednesday. Individual statistics were not available.

Farmington comes calling as the Spartans play their first home match on Thursday at 4:15 p.m., before heading out to another non-conference opponent at St. Paul Central at 3 p.m. Friday.

Volleyball

After scrimmaging last week, the Simley volleyball team is set to dive into Classic Suburban competition this week with an opening game on Tuesday, Aug. 30 against visiting North St. Paul.

The Spartans are also scheduled to play at Tartan on Thursday, Sept. 1. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Girls Swimming and Diving

Back in the pool this Thursday will be the Simley girls swimming and diving team as the Spartans host the Classic Suburban Conference Relays on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Grove Pool.

Football

Simley's football squad opens the season against a daunting foe in traditional power St. Thomas Academy on Friday night at 7 p.m. within the friendly confines of the Simley High School Stadium.

Cross-Country Running

The Simley cross-country running team begins its fall campaign in an invitational meet at Eagan High School on Friday at 2 p.m.
