Sports Roundup: Feb. 14, 2012

Catch up on your favorite Simley High School sports teams.

Boys Basketball: The Simley High School boys basketball team lost in their only game last week 80-56 to Henry Sibley.
Both John Spillane amd Verneal Baxter pitched in 13 points a piece. South St. Paul is last in the conference followed by Simley with just one conference win and 8.5 games behind Tartan.
The team's overall record is 6-14 on the season and will face St. Thomas Academy Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Girls Basketball: Victorious in both games last week the girls hoops have a record of 18-4.

After a 61-58 win over Richfield on Feb. 6 the team faced Henry Sibley and won 54-40. Kylie Brown scored the most, 19, followed by Shauna Horsch with 12.

The team is tied for second in the conference with Hill-Murray 2 games behind Richfield. The next game is against Mahtomedi on Feb. 14.

Boys Hockey: Trailing all other teams in the Classic Suburban Conference the team lost on Feb. 9 to North St. Paul 4-3 and beat Henry Sibley 4-3 on Feb. 11.

In the loss to North St. Paul the Spartans were ahead most of the game with goals from Brandon Reitberger, Zach Alsterlund and Pat Short in the first two periods. At the end of the second period the score was 3-1. Then within about six minutes  North St. Paul netted three goals and the Spartans were unable to recover.

The team's overall record is 15-7 and the next game is on Feb, 14 against St. Thomas Academy.

Girls Hockey: In the first section game the girls hockey team beat Mahtomedi 1-0 on Feb. 10.

The win was a scoreless game until Jessica Pate, assisted by Sydney Knutson, scored 10 minutes into the third period.

The next game is against Minnehaha on Feb. 15.

Wrestling: The wrestling team put another W in the win column after a meet against St. Michael Albertville on Feb. 10.

Mack Short (138), Jake Short (145),Micah Barnes all won by pinning their opponent and Juan Torres (126), Nick Wanzek (152), Cody Hazelette (195)won by a major decision and Dale Barner (160) Jack Ryan (220) and Matt Kadrlik (heavyweight) all won by decision.

The section 4A team tournament is on Feb. 18.

Boys Swimming and Diving: According to a parent, the scheduled meet against Red Wing turned into "a fun event" where the teams split into two intersquad teams - dubbed "Simwing" and "Redley."

Rather than the traditional meet the coaches diverted from the norm.

Sections start on Feb. 23.

Gymnastics: In the conference meet at Simley on Feb. 9 the Spartans had the team's best score of the season - 124.95 and finished fourth at the meet behind Mahtomedi, Tartan and North St. Paul.

Jill Richgels finished seventh on vault with a score of 8.725 and Sarah Birkelo was eigth on vault scoring 8.7.

The section meet is on Feb. 18 at Red Wing.
