SPORTS ROUNDUP: Girls Basketball Team Wins Seventh Straight Game

Here is a look at recent action by Simley varsity teams:

BOYS BASKETBALL
Concordia-Roseville overcame a four-point halftime deficit to defeat Simley, 61-55, on Friday.

Last Tuesday, the Spartans earned their first Classic Suburban Conference game of the season with a 66-51 win over North St. Paul. Simley was led by Sam Stensgard with 20 points.

Simley, 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the Classic Suburban Conference, will visit South St. Paul in Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Simley scored its seventh consecutive victory with its 42-22 decision over Mankato Loyola on Saturday.

The Spartans, 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference, have been on a roll since dropping games at New Prague and Tartan by a combined six points in mid-December. Since then, they won three games in the Simley holiday tournament, as well as single games over Richfield, Henry Sibley, North and Mankato Loyola.

They currently are tied for first place with three other teams in the conference.

Simley will visit South St. Paul on Tuesday.

GYMNASTICS
Simley’s 124.65-121.875 victory over Tartan on Thursday moved the Spartans into second place in the conference standings.

The Spartans were led by Sarah Birkelo, with second-place finishes on the vault, beam, floor and all-around; and Sarah Kruse, third on the bars.

Simley visited Mahtomedi on Saturday. The team will host Henry Sibley on Thursday.

BOYS HOCKEY
Simley had a tough time with Irondale on Saturday, losing a 7-0 decision.

The Spartans were outshot, 34-13. Mike Sarantos made 27 saves.

Simley, 3-12 overall and 1-4 in the conference, will visit South St. Paul on Thursday.

GIRLS HOCKEY
Simley lost its fourth game in a row in heartbreaking fashion, as Tartan scored the game’s only goal in the third period in a 1-0 game Jan. 11.

Tartan outshot the Spartans, 23-22. Emma Tschida stopped 22 shots in Simley’s goal.

Simley, 6-9-3 overall and 0-5-1 in the conference, will visit Mahtomedi on Tuesday.

BOYS SWIM AND DIVE
Simley remained undefeated in dual meets with a 103-81 win over Henry Sibley on Thursday.

Alec Kandt had another big meet for the Spartans, 3-0 overall, by setting the conference record in the 100 breaststroke, as well as winning the 100 free.

Other individual winners for the Spartans included Mike Ausen, in the 50 free and 100 backstroke; and Nathan Stone, 1-meter diving.

Simley will host Tartan on Tuesday.

WRESTLING
Simley swept its matches last week, defeating South St. Paul and Tartan at a triangular on Thursday and beating Roseville, Wabasha-Kellogg and Centennial on Saturday.

The Spartans improved their dual match record to 17-5. They will wrestle St. Thomas Academy and Mahtomedi in a triangular meet on Thursday.
