SPORTS ROUNDUP: Several Simley Teams Open Winter Seasons

The Spartan girls hockey team has played six matches so far, but the girls basketball, gymnastics, boys hockey and wrestling teams are in action for the first time this week.

Here is a look at recent action by Simley varsity teams:

The Simley girls basketball team opened the season with a 57-27 victory over Farmington on Tuesday. The Spartans led by five, 15-10, at halftime before blowing the game open in the second half.

Abby Kain led Simley with 15 points.

Simley will play Mounds View at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Hopkins. The Spartans then return home for games against Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Tuesday and Visitiation on Thursday.

The Simley gymnastics team opens the season with its invitational on Saturday. Other schools taking part include Bloomington Jefferson, Rosemount, Henry Sibley, South St. Paul, St. Anthony, Bloomington Kennedy, Hudson and North St. Paul.

Competition starts at 11 a.m.

The Simley boys hockey team opened the season with a 7-2 loss to St. Paul Academy on Thursday.

SPA broke a 1-1 first-period with with four unanswered goals in the second period.

Netting goals for the Spartans were Ben Illetschko, with assists from Nick Battis and John Reibert; and Wylie Siegel, with an assist from Mitch Vogel.

Simley will visit Spring Lake Park at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Simley girls hockey team saw its record fall to 3-2-1 with a 5-0 loss to Spring Lake Park on Thursday.

Emma Tschida stopped 20 shots for the Spartans.

Simley plays at Alexandria today and at Fergus Falls on Saturday.

The defending Class 2A state champion Simley wrestling team opens its season with a home match against Owatonna today. The junior varsity squad wrestles at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7 o’clock.

On Saturday, the Spartans travel to Rochester John Marshall for the Rochester Duals.
