Sports Roundup: Simley Girls Nip Minneapolis

Laken Muller, Natalie Battis score two goals apiece as the Spartans improve to 8-5 overall.

Natalie Battis scored two goals in the second period and Laken Muller netted a pair in the third period to lift the Simley girls hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Minneapolis Tuesday night in Inver Grove Heights.

The Spartans, 8-5 overall, fell behind 2-0 in the first period before getting on the scoreboard with Battis’ goals and a goal by Mackenzie Molnar in the second. The in the third, Minneapolis tied it up 25 second into the period before Muller's goals put Simley ahead for good.

Muller notched two assists to go with her goals. Jessica Pate record four assists.

Next up for the Spartans are three Classic Suburban Conference road games in seven days, starting with a visit to South St. Paul on Friday. 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Simley opened Classic Suburban Conference play with a 74-65 loss at North St. Paul Tuesday night.

John Spillane led the Spartans with 25 points and was followed in double figures in scoring by Verneal Baxter with 13 points and Sam Stensgard with 11.

Simley, 4-6 overall, will host Henry Sibley Jan. 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Simley girls basketball team got back into the win column with a 44-33 win over Classic Suburban foe North St. Paul Tuesday night in the conference opener for both teams. The victory upped the Spartans’ overall record to 10-1.

Abby Kain led Simley’s balanced scoring attack with 10 points. Kylie Brown added eight points.

Simley will host Rogers on Friday.
