Sports Roundup: Simley Runs At Roy Griak Invitational

The Spartans competed in one of the largest high school cross-country meets in the nation on Saturday.

Members of the cross-country teams took part in one of the largest high school meets in the nation on Saturday as they competed in the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course.

Cross-Country

Competing in the Maroon Division, the Simley boys cross-country team finished 48th in the Griak Invite, while five Spartans girls also competed.

Max Wellens finished sixth overall with a five-kilometer time of 16 minutes, 52 seconds. Following Wellens were: Christian Goettsch (18:49) in 152nd place, T.J. Farber (20:41) in 387th, Kyle Nordstrom (21:15) in 420th, Parker Tangen (21:31) in 433rd, Lucas Ferguson (21:43) in 438th and Connor Phares (22:22) in 448th.

Margie Freed led the Simley girls on the 5K course, finishing seventh with a time of 19:47. Aejah Lockett took 268th in 24:09, Andrea Castillo placed 341st in 25:49 and Summer Freed came in 358th in 26:31. Mady David also ran, but did not finish.

Girls Soccer

The Simley soccer team carried a 5-5-1 overall record and a 3-3-1 Classic Suburban Conference mark into this week after splitting against Tartan (3-2 win) and Hill-Murray (3-2 loss) last Tuesday and Thursday respectively.

Jill Richgels leads the Spartans with 15 goals, while Sarah Luby has five goals and Natalie Battis five assists entering this week.

Boys Soccer

A 2-0 win versus Tartan last Tuesday and a 1-0 loss at Hill-Murray last Thursday brought the Henry Sibley boys soccer team into this week with a record of 6-3-2 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Individual statistics were not available.

Volleyball

A 3-2 loss to Richfield last Thursday followed a 3-2 defeat of Henry Sibley last Tuesday as the Simley volleyball team entered this week with a 5-6 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the Classic Suburban. Individual statistics were not available.

Complete results/statistics for the Simley girls tennis and swim/dive teams were not made available.
