Sports Roundup: Simley Spartans Teams Kick it into High Gear

The Spartans picked up a handful of wins this week, and many of the winter sports teams faced two or even three opponents.

Boys Basketball

John Spillane led the Simley boys basketball team to victory over St. Croix Preparatory Academy 79-62 on Tuesday night. Spillane scored 22, while Aaron Gartner scored 13 and Rayshawn Baxter scored 11. Eric Jones had 15 rebounds.

girls basketball rolled over Harding High School in a 79-23 victory on Tuesday, with Abby Kain and Shauna Horsch scoring 15 and 14 points, respectively. On Saturday, Simley did it again, defeating Visitation 60-34, with Abby Kain again leading the Spartans offense. Kain scored a whopping 23 points and 22 rebounds against Visitation.

Dance Team

The Simley Dance Team headed to Richfield on Tuesday night for a varsity conference meet against Richfield, Henry Sibley, Hill-Murray, North High School and others. The dancers beat out their opponents, taking first place at the meet.

Gymnastics

The Spartans gymnastics team squeaked by Richfield last Thursday, with a final score of 113.75 to Richfield's 107.15. Simley's top placers were: Taylor Floyd, who took third on vault and beam; Megan Hooper, who took third on bars; Emily Dittel, who placed third on floor and Sarah Birkelo, who had second on vault, bars, floor and in the all-around competition. In addition, Birkelo took first place on beam.

Boys Hockey

The boys hockey team shut out St. Paul Highland Park 6-0 on Thursday. Ben Rauschnot picked up three goals, while Brandon Reitberger contributed a pair of goals to Simley's win. This weekend, however, Simley took one on the chin against Mahtomedi on Saturday, losing 6-1. Ben Illestchko scored the lone Spartans goal late in the third period of the game.

Girls Hockey

The Spartans girls hockey team tied with Tartan 1-1 during their game on Tuesday, but lost both its following games on Thursday and Saturday. Cretin-Derham Hall edged out the Spartans 4-2 on Thursday, and Hill-Murray pounced on the team, winning 8-1 on Saturday.

Wrestling

The Simley boys trounced Richfield-Edina 52-0 and North High School 51-6 at a triangular meet last Thursday. Simley had a total of five pins against Richfield-Edina wrestlers, and seven pins against North.
