SPORTS ROUNDUP: Simley Wrestlers Take Fourth in Christmas Tournament

Here is a look at recent action by Simley varsity teams:

BOYS BASKETBALL
The Simley boys basketball team takes a 2-0 record into Tuesday’s game at St. Croix Prep.

The Spartans opened the season last week with a pair of victories: 60-57 over North Branch and 52-15 over Park.

Sam Stensgard scored a game-high 19 points for Simley over Park.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Simley girls basketball team dropped a tough 51-50 decision to New Prague on Friday.

The Spartans were down 33-16 at halftime before outscoring the host New Prague team, 34-18, in the second half.

In its other game last week, Simley defeated Rogers, 61-51. Abby Kain scored 21 points, and Kyle Brown had 11 rebounds and four assists.

The Spartans (4-3) will Tartan on Tuesday.

BOYS HOCKEY
The Simley boys hockey team fell to 1-5 on the season with its 4-3 loss to North St. Paul on Saturday.

The Spartans led 2-1 after two period before North St. Paul took the lead for good in the third period.

Scoring goals for Simley were Pat Short, on an assist from Nick Battis; Ben Illetschko, on Battis’ second assist; and Nick McCoy, on an assist by Aaron Leafgren.

Mike Sarantos stopped 21 shots for the Spartans, who will host Richfield on Thursday.

GIRLS HOCKEY
The Simley girls hockey team went 1-1-1 last week, as it tied Mahtomedi, 3-3; was shut out by South St. Paul, 6-0; and blanked St. Peter, 9-0.

In the Spartans’ win over St. Peter, Nikki Nelson recorded a hat trick, with a goal in the second period and two goals in the third period. Laken Muller had two goals, while Lexi Muller, Anna Royce and Taylor Bergum added a goal apiece.

Simley (5-5-3) will visit Minneapolis on Tuesday.

WRESTLING
The Simley wrestling team took fourth place out of 36 teams in the Minnesota Christmas Tournament last weekend in Rochester. The top five teams were St. Michael-Albertville, with 256.5 points; Apple Valley, 247.5; Kasson-Mantorville, 245; Simley, 177.5; and Cambridge-Isanti, 161.

Winning tournament championships for the Spartans were Jake Short, at 145 pounds; and Nick Wanzek, at 170 pounds. Kyle Gilva took second place at 132 pounds, Mack Short was fourth at 152 and Jack Ryan was fifth at 220.

Simley is off until Dec. 28-29, when it takes part in the Class 11 National High School Wrestling Duals in Rochester.
