Sports Roundup: Spartans Squeezed In Full Slate Of Pre-Labor Day Contests

Simley squads all had a complete schedule of match-ups for the first week of September.

The heart of the autumn sports season is right around the corner, and the pace has picked up for Simley High School athletic teams, who all had a full schedule the first week of September.

Boys Soccer

With back-to-back wins last week, the Simley boys soccer team remained undefeated through its first five contests of the season.

The Spartans opened Classic Suburban Conference play with a 1-0 road win at Tartan on Wednesday, Aug. 31, then defeated St. Paul Humboldt at home the next day to improve to 4-0-1 on the year.

Joe Trenzeluk leads the balanced Simley attack with two goals and an assist, with Kellen Asmundson, Henry Hark and Malcolm Willie each logging one goal and one assist apiece.

George Knowlton also has a goal to his name through the first two weeks, and goalie Nathan Spores has made 30 saves on 32 shots through five games.

This week, the Spartans host Holy Angels on Tuesday, before delving back into Classic Suburban play on Thursday evening; both games are set to begin at 7 p.m.

Girls Soccer

The Simley girls soccer team followed up a 5-4 win over visiting Hastings on Tuesday, Aug. 30 with a 6-6 tie at Henry Sibley two nights later to bring a 2-2-1 record into this week.

Jill Richgels, with a team-high 31 shots, leads the Spartans with six goals and also has two assists. Sarah Luby had three goals, with Melanie Bailey accounting for two goals and two assists.

Goalkeepers Kelly Chandler and Laken Muller have each seen action in three games apiece, with Chandler making 21 saves and Muller six stops thus far.

Simley hosts Classic Suburban foe Richfield on Tuesday and conference rival North St. Paul on Thursday; both games kick off at 5 p.m.

Volleyball

The Simley volleyball team opened its season with back-to-back losses to North St. Paul (3-1) and Tartan (3-0) last Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Spartans host Hill-Murray on Thursday at 7 p.m., then compete in the Irondale Tournament beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Swimming and Diving

The Simley girls swimming and diving team hosted the Classic Suburban Relays last Thursday, finishing fifth with a score of 88.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Spartans compete at South St. Paul at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Cross-Country Running

The Simley cross-country running teams both opened their season by competing at the Dakota Classic in Eagan last Friday.

The Spartans boys finished ninth with 225 points, led by second-place finisher Max Wellens, who took second with a time of 10 minutes, 24.6 seconds.Simley's girls squad took 11th, with Margie Freed leading the way with an eighth-place run of 12:23.8.

Both squads are scheduled to run at Rochester Mayo at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Results were not made available for the Simley girls tennis team.
