The Dog Blog: My Misbehaving Little Malinois

Dog experts out there, what advice can you give me to combat his digging and chewing?

What was once a beautiful little puppy has morphed into something that is part-time devil, part-time trickster and full-time pain in the rump.  Seven months ago I rescued a two-month-old Belgian Malinois from Brooklyn Park-based Midwest Animal Rescue & Services.   I got an amazing puppy that was intelligent, cuddly, curious and full of energy. He ate everything put in front of him, listened to direction and was potty-trained after just a day. Then it happened—he turned nine months old.  I named my little guy Kuma which means Bear in Japanese, but, as it turns out, something like Lucifer would have been more appropriate. The dog I once deemed "my perfect puppy" is still curious and full of energy, but now he appears to have contracted some …

Another thing you can do about the digging is to give him a place where he's ALLOWED to dig to his heart's content - like a sandbox or even an inexpensive kiddie pool filled with sand or dirt. Oh, and if running isn't an option because he's faster and has more endurance than you do, you may consider biking. There are a number of bike attachments with which to safely tether your dog to the bike on…   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Rash of Robberies in Inver Grove Heights

The author also provides seven tips to help protect you and your family.

When you think of crime, you don’t think suburbs. You imagine things like murder, rape and robbery only happen to city dwellers. You use your security systems and lock your doors, imagining that these measures keep you safe.  It’s not enough.  I live in a townhouse community in Inver Grove Heights, a quiet yet lively place where people walk their dogs and strollers down well-kept paths. Drivers watch for joggers and are courteous to other vehicles. People watch out for each other. It’s not odd to see five or more people grilling hamburgers in their driveways, inviting crowds of neighbors and friends to stand around the grill and laugh and eat.  That reality was shattered for my mother and me this March. We recently moved to the …

Keith - Great plan but as I found out unless you have the names of those who did it, IGH PD will most likely put forth any effort. Link to our "Theft Caught on Camera" story that was posted on The IGH Patch this past October: http://invergroveheights.patch.com/articles/video-bike-theft-caught-on-tape#youtube_video-8156517 The case was "closed" after they questioned one kid. Parents Talk: More Kids Have Autism

A spectrum of conclusions explain autism spectrum disorders. What are you doing to limit autism risks for your children?

Some scary new statistics on autism were released last week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now estimates that 1 in 88 children in the United States have been identified as having autism, according to a study that looked at data from 14 communities. Results have changed since 2009, when 11.3 per 1,000 8-year-old children had been identified as having autism. There has been a 23 percent increase since the last report. Some of this increase is due to the way children are identified, diagnosed and served in their communities, although exactly how much is due to these factors is unknown, according to the CDC. Although the cause of autism is not yet known, scientists have studied children on the spectrum and parents have…

PATCH POLL: Will You Vote in Tuesday’s Technology Levy Special Election?

Inver Grove Heights school district residents are being asked to vote on the fate of the district’s 10-year, $700,000-per-year levy proposal to pay for technology costs.

Residents served by Inver Grove Heights Community Schools are being asked to head to the polls on Tuesday, March 27, to vote on the school district’s proposed 10-year, $700,000-per-year technology levy. Will you be one of those casting a ballot? District leaders say the capital levy would pay for technology costs currently being covered by the district’s general fund. Thus, those general fund dollars could be used for other purposes. Nearby districts like South St. Paul, West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan, Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan and South Washington County have voter-approved capital levies covering their technology costs. The district’s technology levy either has been mentioned in or been the subject of a number of stories lately. …

Parents Talk: Craving 'The Hunger Games'? What Age is Too Young to See This Blockbuster?

Is this film too extreme for your child or pre-teen? Add a comment below to take part in the debate.

Ladies and gentlemen, let The Hunger Games begin on screens near you. Tickets are on sale for Friday's 12:01 a.m. debut of the thriller based on the lead book in Suzanne Collins' young adult trilogy. It opens nationally that day in more than 4,000 theaters and is sure to be a box office smash. For showings at nearby theaters—for instance, AMC Showplace Inver Grove 16, 5567 Bishop Ave., is showing it—use the Moviefone widget above. Though the 2008 best-seller's gory violence has been notched back enough to snare a PG-13 rating, the film spurs discussion about age-appropriateness—just as Collins' provocative books do when they're in school libraries or classrooms. The first volume depicts a totalitarian nation, Panem, where a girl and boy …

Not so long ago "The Hunger Games" would have received an "R" rating because of the violence and threat of violence against children. They've either tamed the movie down considerably from the book or they've drastically changed the rating system. The books were written with teenagers in mind and it's my belief that 13 is probably the minimum age for viewing, though a lot depends upon the maturity…   more ›

LETTER: Keep Property Taxes Fair For All

Transition to Homestead Market Value Exclusion program should be given time to work.

To the Editor: This November, Minnesotans will cast ballots to fill the seats of all 201 members of the State House and Senate. As usual in an election year, property taxes will be a hot topic. As mayors of seven Twin Cities suburban communities, we are well-versed in the complexities of our property tax system.  At the city level, the rubber literally meets the road.  Our city councils have made tough decisions over the past several years to maintain critical services while doing our best to keep property taxes down. Last year, the legislature and Gov. Dayton enacted property tax changes that have caught some homestead and commercial property taxpayers by surprise.  The biggest change was the transition from the Market Value Homestead …

Letter to the Editor: Get Involved in Curing Multiple Sclerosis

March 12 to 18 is MS Awareness Week.

To the editor: I live in Inver Grove Heights and I’m one of millions of people committed to bringing us closer to a world free of Multiple Sclerosis. Every hour of every day, someone is newly diagnosed with MS—an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain and stops people from moving. I understand the effects of MS first hand as I am approaching my ninth anniversary of being diagnosed with MS when I was just 23 years old. Long story short, the treatment I am currently on didn’t even exist when I was first diagnosed. Because of advances in research and the creation of additional treatments, I am able to live a full and blessed life! March 12 to 18 is MS Awareness Week and …
