Inver Hills Pioneers FAIM Tuition Assistance Program

At least 75 Inver Hills students will be supported in the FAIM program during the 2011-12 academic year.

Inver Hills Community College has become the first college in Minnesota to offer its students the Family Assets for Independence Minnesota (FAIM) tuition assistance program. When combined with financial aid assistance programs, FAIM allows students the opportunity to graduate from college with little to no debt. According to a release from Inver Hills, for every $1 a FAIM participant saves into a special savings account, a federal match contributes an additional $1.50 and the Inver Hills Foundation does the same, providing a total of $3 for every $1 saved. Looks like a great time was had by all! Parents and former prom-goers, what was your favorite part of prom when you were in high school? The fancy dinner? The dance? The Grand March? Dressing up? For me, shopping for the dress was as much fun as the dance itself - I love an excuse to go shopping, especially for formalwear!   more ›

Simley Baseball Comes Up Short Against Sibley

Despite fighting back to 5-4, Simley couldn't find enough firepower to overcome the Warriors at home.

The Simley baseball team came out cold against Henry Sibley Thursday night to find itself in a 4-1 hole early on. But the Spartans turned things on late and outscored the Warriors 3-1 in the final innings but still managed to lose 5-4.  With base runners at the corners in the top of the fifth inning, a Sibley runner stole second to advance home the Warriors' fifth run of the game.  The sixth inning looked promising after the Simley infield turned a tricky double play on a well-hit ball to retire the Warriors side. Then in the bottom of the inning Simley bats brought in two runs to bring the score to 5-4.  After the Sibley pitcher walked the winning run to first base in the bottom of the seventh inning, Spartans bats failed to deliver.  The…

Cadets Spoil Spartans' Senior Day

St. Thomas Academy used a dominant third quarter to rattle off 14 goals against a young Spartans defense.

The youth and relative inexperience of the Spartans boys lacrosse team was laid bare in Thursday night's 14-6 loss to St. Thomas Academy at Simley High School.  After playing to a 3-3 tie in the first quarter, the Cadets pulled ahead 8-4 in the second behind three goals from senior captain Sean Hickey. An early third quarter goal brought the deficit to 8-5 and with momentum on their side the Spartans' chances of an upset looked promising.  But Simley appeared to lose its composure shortly thereafter, allowing St. Thomas to go on a 6-1 run to finish the game.  To add insult to injury, Thursday night was Parent's Night for Simley's seven seniors.  The Spartans next face Roseville in a home game Friday night.

Seems to me Dr. Wells was simply keeping her options open, just like you or me would. That's fair isn't it?   more ›

Spartans Lacrosse Downed By Holy Family Despite Gutsy Second Half

After giving up just two goals in the first quarter, Simley gave up seven in the second, leading to a 9-3 halftime deficit.

Two goals apiece from junior Kellen Asmundson and sophomore Zach Aten wasn't enough to lift the Spartans boys lacrosse team to victory over Holy Family Catholic High School Monday night.  Falling 16-6 in front of a home crowd, the Spartans struggled to keep pace with the Holy Family juggernaut despite flashes of brilliance in the first, third and fourth quarters. Three-year head coach Garnet Asmundson chalked up the loss to his team's lack of experience.  "We as coaches and players have to base our success on smaller victories besides winning and losing," Asmundson said. "There are only six returning players from last year's team. On top of being young, we're quite inexperienced and it shows at times." Asmundson continued: "(Lacrosse) is a…
