Keep a close eye on these swimming, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics and hockey players this fall, as they take up leadership roles on their respective teams.
As the winter high school sports season gets underway, these five Simley High School athletes are primed to lead their teams to victory. Pedro DeLao DeLao's speed on the wrestling mat helped him to a 43-7 record during last year's winter wrestling season, and Coach Will Short hopes to see similar things from this young athlete in the coming months. DeLao, a 2010-2011 state champion in the 119-pound weight class, has matured and grown into a leader on the wrestling team, Short said. He will likely wrestle in the 120-pound weight class this year. "He’s got great character, and he’s a great team guy as well; he cares a lot about the team," Short said. Taylor Floyd Many successful gymnasts begin the sport at a young age. But Simley senior …

The Simley High School head swimming and diving coach reflects back on a very successful season.
Simley High’s swimmers and divers had another banner year, capped by a sixth place finish at the state meet. Inver Grove Heights Patch sat down with coach Lynn Newton to get her take on the season. Inver Grove Heights Patch: What was the highlight of the year for you? Coach Lynn Newton: Just the unexpectedness of how well we did. In many ways we were in a big rebuilding year and some of the other coaches at state even said 'We thought you were in a rebuilding year.' It’s really fun that there really weren’t many expectations for [the students] and to see them really come through in the second half of the season and get that second place at sections and see them place in the top 10 again at state, it was awesome. Patch: Was there a meet or …

Spartans will have six individual swims and dives and two relay teams competing in this weekend's state swimming and diving meet
Simley High School's contingent at the state swimming and diving meet this year will be small in numbers, but mighty in ability. The Spartans finished as the runner-up in the Class A team tournament last season, but likely don’t have enough qualifiers to make a run at this year’s title. Simley will send just four swimmers and junior diver Carter Lange to this year’s state meet, which runs Thursday through Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. “We have a lot of top guns, we just don’t have the depth,” said Simley senior Alex Jurrens. “But we also have a very young team as well.” Simley qualified both its 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays teams, plus senior swimmer Nate Briguet in the 50 and 100 freestyles, …
