Spartan Youth Basketball Camp in High Gear

Youth from around the community are working hard on fundamentals and improving skills at a week-long camp at the Inver Grove Heights Middle School.

Nearly 30 fourth- through eighth-grade students are picking up new skills at the Spartan Youth Basketball camp this week. Campers are following the motto that “basketball teams are made during the season, basketball players are made during the off-season.” Simley head boys basektball coach Ben Bushaw is leading the camp, held at the Inver Grove Heights Middle School gymnasium. Simley assistant coaches and current varsity basketball players are also coaching at the camp, which started on Monday and runs through Friday. "We want to focus on improving individual skills and fundamentals," Bushaw said. Camp attendees are working on passing, dribbling and ball handling. On this day, the group was working hard on perfecting their left-handed lay-…

Saint Thomas Academy Edges Simley in Overtime

Simley missed a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but the Cadets won in overtime.

Simley High School was inches away from a three-game winning streak on Tuesday night, but Saint Thomas Academy rallied in overtime, winning 62-57 against Inver Grove. After the defeat on Tuesday night, Simley fell to 7-15 on the season and 2-11 in Classic Suburban Conference play. Saint Thomas Academy evened its overall record to 7-7 and went to 13-8 in the conference. The game was hard fought on both ends of the court. Saint Thomas Academy led 30-24 at halftime, but Simley rallied to take a 41-40 lead on a drive and three-point play by junior Max Wellens. The rest if the second half  was a back-and-forth dogfight, with neither team managing more than a four-point advantage. Simley's Shinoby Yang scored with 23 seconds left in regulation …

Henry Sibley Pulls Away From Simley Boys Basketball in Second Half

Simley's offense fared better in the second contest this season against Henry Sibley, but the team couldn't muster enough firepower.

Held to just 18 points in the first game against Henry Sibley this season, Simley High School was able to get its offense going in the second meeting between the two teams. The push wasn’t enough to derail the visiting Henry Sibley Warriors, but at least Simley coach Ben Bushaw can say the team made progress. “We’re just looking for improvement at this part of the season,” said Simley head coach Ben Bushaw. “We improved on the offensive end. We’re trying to get better at not letting the game get away from us.” Henry Sibley pulled away from a 33-26 halftime lead to score a 72-51 victory Tuesday in a Classic Suburban Conference boys basketball game at Inver Grove Heights on Tuesday night. The visiting Warriors improved to 5-11 on the season …

Highly-Ranked Titans Shoot Down Simley Boys Basketball

The Spartans couldn't find the range and lose 67-27 to the visiting Tartan Titans in a boys basketball contest.

Tartan High School showed the Spartans how it’s done on Tuesday, defeating host Simley High School 67-27 in a boys basketball matchup at Inver Grove Heights. Tartan jumped out to an early 12-0 lead and never looked back. After their victory last night, Tartan improved to 13-1 on the season and 6-1 in the league. The Titans, ranked seventh in the Pioneer Press’ latest high school basketball standings, have lost only once this season, a one-point defeat at Hill-Murray. Simley couldn’t buy a basket in the first half, and fell to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Tartan led 27-6 with 5:51 in the first half. But coach Mark Klingsporn wasn’t satisfied. “I want to see basketball done the right way,” Klingsporn yelled at his players from the…

Young Spartans Fall to North Boys

Simley High School players were chilly against North High School Polars in their 48-30 loss Tuesday.

Simley High School, which boasts just two seniors in its starting lineup, continued its boys basketball maturation project Tuesday, dropping a 48-30 contest to visiting North St. Paul in a Classic Suburban conference game. The North St. Paul Polars, which led from start to finish, snapped a five-game losing streak. Simley fell to 4-6 on the season and 0-3 in the conference. North improved to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the league. Simley was coming off a pair of rough outings. The Spartans had lost 90-35 at Richfield and 53-18 at Henry Sibley Friday. Tuesday’s game was more of the same as the Spartans struggled offensively, committed too many turnovers and had key defensive lapses. “We’re a pretty young team, without a lot of varsity experience…
