Moms Talk: What to Do When Your Children Are Bullied

As a parent, how do you handle situations where your child has been bullied, or is bullying another student.

Roughly 13 million students, or one-third of all school-age children in the United States, are bullied each year, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Bullying is no longer confined to the schoolyard or classrooms, either. The advent of social networking means that students can experience bullying online via Facebook, Myspace or other sites. Last week, President Obama First Lady Michelle Obama, the Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services met with students, teachers and non-profit leaders at the White House as part of a Conference on Bullying Prevention. To coincide with the conference, Patch thought it would be helpful to address bullying in Moms Talk, our weekly discussion forum for parents. …

Inver Grove Heights Students Tackle Bullying With A Little Creativity

An innovative non-profit in Inver Grove Heights uses plays and engaging activities to impart positive social lessons to students.

You never know what is going on in another person’s life, fourth-grader Taylor Merrell said sagely. Somebody in their family may have died, or their parents could be going through a divorce. Which is why you should never bully another student, Merrell concluded. It’s a lesson that Merrell and other fourth-graders at Salem Hills Elementary School absorbed on Wednesday, after non-profit theater company CLIMB Theatre held a 40-minute-long presentation and workshop on bullying. Based in Inver Grove Heights, CLIMB Theatre was founded in 1975 by Peg Wetli, who designed it to engage and support disabled students. Over more than three decades of operation, however, the troupe has morphed into an educational tool for all students, Wetli said. CLIMB…

Seth Kaltwasser and Derrick Mosley, two actors with CLIMB Theatre, used skits, activities and engagement to demonstrate the effects bullying can have on students during a visit to a fourth-grade classroom at Salem Hills Elementary. CLIMB, a non-profit theater company based in Inver Grove Heights, frequently performs plays or teaches in-classroom workshops on socially-relevant topics like bullying, environmentalism and personal finances.
