I have absolutely zero interest in a taxpayer sponsored dog park. Dog parks may have a place in densely populated metro areas, but in the suburbs, such as IGH, I don't see the need.   more ›

PHOTOS: Inside Inver Grove Heights' New City Hall

The city is putting the finishing touches on its $15.7 million renovation and expansion of City Hall, and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the building earlier this week.

In 2008, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted to issue $9.9 million in capital improvement bonds for the renovation of City Hall—a project estimated to cost $15.7 million. The remainder of the cost—approximately $5.8 million—was drawn from the city's utility fund, facility fund, technology fund and Host Community Fund. The old City Hall, built in 1982, was designed to service a community of roughly 17,000 people. The population of Inver Grove Heights is expected to grow to as much as 45,000 people in the future, and the renovated City Hall is designed for a city of that size. The project, now completed, more than doubled the size of the building, to a total of 62,620 feet.

PHOTOS: City Council Tours Renovated City Hall

The $15.7 million renovation and expansion of City Hall won't be complete until later this fall, but that didn't stop the council from touring the building on Monday.

The five members of the Inver Grove Heights City Council took a tour of City Hall, which is undergoing a $15.7 million renovation and expansion. The project, which added roughly 30,000 square feet to the former City Hall, won't be complete until August or September this year, but the building's new police wing has already earned praise from police department officials. In 2008, the City Council voted to issue $9.9 million in capital improvement bonds for the project, and fund the remainder of the cost—approximately $5.8 million—in money drawn from the city's utility fund, facility fund, technology fund and host community fund. State Law: Cities Can't Ban Guns From Public Meetings

State law says cities can't ban guns on city property. In the wake of the Tucson shooting, what does that mean for the security of our local elected officials?

Editor's Note: Through 17 localized stories that all went online today, Minnesota Patch explores an aspect of the state's Personal Protection Act that prohibits cities from banning firearms in their government centers and other city buildings. Click the "Change Towns" in the upper right corner of the Patch home page to read the stories posted on other Minnesota Patch sites.  For years, Dennis Madden has had a permit to carry a pistol, but the Inver Grove Heights City Councilor has never brought his holstered handgun to a council meeting. The Jan. 8 shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., has Madden reconsidering his decision. While state offices, churches, public schools, private businesses and all courthouses can ban …

City Hall Renovations Earn Praise from Police

Officials say the new public safety wing will improve the efficiency and operations of the police department.

The $15.7 million renovation and expansion of the Inver Grove Heights City Hall has plenty of fans among city staff, including Police Chief Chuck Kleckner. A year and a half ago, when crews broke ground on the project, Kleckner and his officers were making do in a cramped police department a fraction of the size of their brand new public safety wing, completed in August. They had no indoor parking for their 10 squad cars, which meant the cars and the equipment in them were at the mercy of the elements and were vulnerable to vandalism or other damage. Officers and investigators were forced to take potentially sensitive interviews or crime reports in a heavily trafficked hallway, for lack of meeting space. As if that wasn't enough, the …
