Strong Season Comes to End for Simley Boys Tennis Team

Spartans finish 10-6 after losing to Apple Valley in Section 3AA playoffs; section individual and doubles tournament still on tap.

A strong season came to a frustrating end for the Simley boy’s tennis team Tuesday. The Spartans lost to Apple Valley 7-0 in the first round of the Section 3AA playoffs, putting a damper on an otherwise solid season. Simley went 3-14 last year, but finished 10-6 this year. When the Spartans started the season by losing its first two matches of the season, it looked like more of the same from a team that struggled in 2010. Even though those losses were to Mahtomedi and St. Thomas Academy — two traditionally strong programs — the Spartans won only one of 13 matches in those two competitions. But head coach Clay Sollenberger knew his team was better than those performances indicated. And he was right. The Spartans defeated North Saint Paul, …

Consistency Key to Success For Simley Doubles Tandem

Jake Short and Nate Eddy are developing chemistry on the court as they prepare for section action.

Consistent. That's how Jake Short and Nate Eddy describe each other. Short, a sophomore, and Eddy, a freshman, have teamed up to become the top doubles team on a greatly-improved Simley High School tennis team. Eddy says Short has the speed needed to make up ground in a hurry. Short says Eddy is just a steady player who plays a solid all-around game. While neither possess the height and net presence of 6'4" senior teammate Tom Wagner — which can be a major advantage in doubles play – they know their strengths and try to force their opponents to play their game. "We have good chemistry," said Short, a standout running back on the Simley football team and a champion wrestler. "We play similar styles and try not to do too much. We just try to…

Simley's Tennis Team Takes Home Handy Win Over St. Paul Central

The Spartans slammed visiting St. Paul Central in a boys tennis match on Monday, winning an easy, 6-1 victory.

Simley High School's boys tennis team improved their position this spring with a lopsided 6-1 victory on Monday over visiting St. Paul Central. The Spartans mixed up their lineup and still won six of seven matches, including a sweep of all three doubles matches. None of the matches went more than two sets. After finishing last season with a dismal 3-14 record, the Spartans improved to 8-4 this season. The marked improvement from one season to the next is "quite a turnaround," according to Simley head coach Clay Sollenberger. “It was a good match, we represented ourselves well,” Sollenberger said. “We’ve got the ability with a good mix of young guys and some good senior leaders where we’ve got options. We’ve got players we can play at both …

Host Henry Sibley Blanks Simley Boys Tennis Team

The undefeated Warriors were too much for the Spartans boys tennis team, who lost 7-0 in a match on Thursday.

Simley High School came into Thursday's match on the heels of a big 6-1 win over Bloomington Kennedy on Wednesday, but the Spartans were quickly brought back down to earth by undefeated Henry Sibley. Big wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles led host Henry Sibley to a 7-0 clean sweep over visiting Simley in Classic Suburban Conference boys high school tennis. Simley head coach Clay Sollenberger summed the match up in three words: "Sibley is good." Matt Schull of the Henry Sibley Warriors won a back-and-forth battle against Jake Short of Simley at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Short and Pete Johnson at No. 4 doubles forced third sets, but neither could score a breakthrough for the Spartans. “Matt Schull missed all of last year,” said …
