Benilde-St. Margaret's sophomore Jack Jablonski was paralyzed by a hit from behind, putting a renewed focus on checking rules in Minnesota high school hockey.
The severe injury suffered by Benilde-St. Margaret’s hockey player Jack Jablonski has the Minnesota hockey community taking a closer look at the role of body-checking in the sport. As reported by our sister Patch in St. Louis Park, Jablonski, a 16-year-old sophomore, was checked from behind and into the boards during a junior varsity game on Dec. 30 against Wayzata. The hit left Jablonski paralyzed. He had surgery last week at the Hennepin County Medical Center, and though family members said it was a "success," the prognosis is that Jablonski won't be able to walk or skate again. The Minnesota State High School League sent a memo to all hockey coaches, referees and league officials reiterating the dangers of checking from behind, which is…

In part two of a three-part series, medical professionals and high school sports discuss the dangers of concussions.
Ian Quinn doesn't even remember the hit that caused his second concussion. It was the first day of football practice for the Simley High School student and local Boy Scout. After suffering his first mild concussion last spring, he spent much of the summer off his feet recuperating from ongoing headaches. Sam LaShomb made the cut after barely qualifying for tryouts in the first place.
When the invitations went out to tryouts for USA Hockey's U18 women's team, Sam LaShomb wasn't exactly on the top of the list. In fact she was not even on the list period. “I was an alternate to national camp, but I made it to the all-star game and from there I didn't know [what to expect],” LaShomb said. But making the cut at that camp was just the first half of the …
