Exceptional Educator: Jeff Clear, Atheneum School

Each week we'll try to introduce one new teacher to the Inver Grove Heights community.

School districts go through a lot of changes every year. Veteran teachers retire, some switch districts and some are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed right out of college.  In an effort to keep Inver Grove Heights parents up to date on who is heading up local classrooms, we're lauching our newest feature Exceptional Educator.  Each week we'll try to introduce one new teacher to the community. If your child raves about him or her or if you've had a great conference or interaction with that particular teacher, let folks know in the comment stream.  Inver Grove Heights Patch: How long have you been teaching?  Jeff Clear: While it seems like just yesterday that I had my first classroom, I have been teaching for 20 years. It didn't really sink in …

POLL: Should the Federal Government Get to Decide What is Served in Schools?

Well, it's Wednesday again and that means time for another Patch Poll question.

Editor's note: Thanks to Rep. Joe Atkins for the idea for this poll. You can find more polls from Atkins on his Facebook page.  School lunches in Inver Grove Heights Community Schools are gradually becoming smaller, healthier and, to the chagrin of school officials, more controversial.  New federal mandates require schools to serve lunches that include smaller portions of meat and protein, fewer calories and more fruits and vegetables. In this regard, Dakota County schools are slightly ahead of the curve.  The Smart Choices program, developed in 2009 through a partnership between the Dakota County Public Health department and school districts, aims to increase fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains and reduce fat and salt eaten by …

I think school lunches should be regulated and kept to those standards. Eating healthy isn't just about healthier foods it is also about portion control, and I think the Dakota County regulations help with that. Kids spend so much time at school, and fill their brains with knowledge so why can't school fill their bellies with nutritious foods.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: School Board Uses June Retreat to Identify Priorities

According to School Board chair Cindy Nordstrom, members need to listen to concerns about day-to-day operations but stay focused on the larger picture.

The ISD 199 School Board, like many other school boards, used some time this summer for a board retreat.  When you have three new board members at one time, which has not happened in over nine years, we needed some time to become familiar with our roles and each other. The retreat was in June and five out of the seven members were present. The other two board members were brought up to speed at a separate work session in August.   The morning was spent with a communications consultant educating the board on what the political season would look like for a school district to put an item on the ballot this November.  The board had a strategic referendum discussion and even though the need has not gone away for technology funding, Inver …

Franken Commends DARTS Learning Buddies Program on 15th Anniversary

DARTS is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Learning Buddies program.

DARTS, a northern Dakota County nonprofit that provides aging resources, got a nod from Sen. Al Franken this week for the 15th anniversary of the intergenerational Learning Buddies program. The DARTS Learning Buddies program places senior-aged volunteers in Dakota County elementary school classrooms to tutor students in a variety of subjects.  "I'm sure those kids will appreciate not only the academic help that you gave them, but also the interest you showed in their growth and their success," says Franken in his message. Learning Buddies volunteers are credited with providing more than $110,000 in volunteer time to schools each year and helping students make significant gains in reading and math scores.  “The DARTS Learning Buddies …

There must be an election coming up soon. I remember when Uncle Al first got in office. One of his first acts was to take himself and his wife on a trip to a refugee camp in South East Asia, and appropriate some of our tax dollars for it. He was so proud of himself. I doubt that you'll see him trying to send any more of our dollars over seas before the next election.   more ›
