Simley's Jake Short Named Pioneer Press Wrestler of the Year

Short has had an undefeated 41-0 senior year at Simley.

Naming Simley High School senior Jake Short "Wrestler of the Year" must not have been a difficult decision for the Pioneer Press. Looking to win his fourth individual state championship on Saturday, Short is the nation's top-ranked 152-pounder sitting on a 75-match winning streak. Before he enrolls at the University of Minnesota in the fall, Short plans on taking a break from wrestling and trying to reach the state tournament in tennis. "I think I need the break and have earned the time off from wrestling," Short told the Pioneer Press. "I'm a three-sport guy but soon will become a one-sport guy. Golden Gophers Announce Signings of Jake Short, Nick Wanzek

The University of Minnesota on Monday confirmed that the Simley wrestlers have accepted scholarships to become Golden Gophers.

According to the Minnesota Daily and Gophersports.com, the U announced Monday that Simley’s state champion wrestlers signed their National Letters of Intent during the early signing period and will join Minnesota’s wrestling program next year. Short and Wanzek signed their letters during a ceremony at Simley on Nov. 14. Five Spartans Pin Down Wrestling Titles

On Saturday, the Simley High School wrestling team added a handful of individual championships to the Class 2A team title it captured last week.

What a weekend for the Simley High wrestling team. After capturing their fifth consecutive Class 2A championship—and ninth state title in school history—last Thursday, the Spartans took home five individual Class 2A state titles on Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Jake Short, wrestling at 145 pounds, earned his third individual state title, while Kyle Gliva, at 113 pounds, and Nick Wanzek, at 152 pounds, each pinned down his second state championship. First-time title-winners included Juan Torres, at 126 pounds, and Micah Barnes, at 170 pounds. The state championship ended what could be described as an incredible season for Barnes, a senior who finished with a perfect 47-0 record in individual matches. The Pioneer Press …

I too, want to thank the coaches at the youth level and through high school. My grandson had a great journey with the simley program from the youth level at 3rd grade to 4 state team championships. I can't say enough for all the coaches who taught Pedro his wrestling prowess. Because of an injury he couldn't wrestle in the individual state tournament but he an opportunity to help the team win …   more ›
