Mayor George Tourville is scheduled to undergo surgery first thing Wednesday morning.
Mayor George Tourville announced Monday evening that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He is scheduled to undergo surgery first thing Wednesday morning. Doctors told Tourville that while they're unsure how advanced his condition is, he should expect a two- to three-month recovery period. "It better go a lot faster than that," Tourville said in a phone call to Patch. Tourville also took a moment to give a piece of advice to all men. "My whole thing is for guys to make sure they get their annual physicals. Mine was detected during a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. The city's total expenditures over the past three years were $34.88 million in 2010, $35.01 million in 2011 and $35.06 million in 2012.
According to Tuesday's 2012 Business Town Hall Meeting the financial state of Inver Grove Heights is stabilizing. Hosted by Mayor George Tourville and City Administrator Joe Lynch, the presentation began by detailing the operating budget of the city—$17.79 million in 2012—and showing that the current budget is just 0.2 percent higher than that in 2011. Lynch then provided a chart of the city's total expenditures over the past three years, which were $34.88 million in 2010, $35.01 million in 2011 and $35.06 million this year. "We've tried to do a good job of keeping expenditures down," Lynch said. "We've seen less than a 0.5 percent increase over a two-year span." Property values in the city, however, do not appear quite as promising…

The Inver Grove Heights City Council removes “acting” from Stanger's police chief title after he completed his sixth-month interim period.
Larry Stanger now is the official police chief for Inver Grove Heights. After one question from Mayor George Tourville—”Are you ready to be police chief of Inver Grove Heights?”—and praise from city leaders, the City Council unanimously approved Stanger as the city’s new top cop at its Monday meeting. Stanger, a member of Inver Grove’s police force since 1989, had been acting police chief since former chief Chuck Kleckner retired last summer. By the way, Stanger told Tourville he was ready to become chief. City Administrator Joe Lynch said Stanger performed well during his six-month term as acting chief, thus earning the veteran officer the position of the city’s permanent chief. Lynch based his assessment partially on reports from Stanger…

Some officials say alternative revenue sources, like the city's Host Community Fund, are coming under increasing pressure as the city deals with a shrinking budget.
To spend or not to spend? That's the question facing the Inver Grove Heights City Council. City officials are grappling with the 2012 budget and as much as $292,000 in budget reductions. But even as the city looks to cut its expenses, city officials are paying more and more attention to the city's revenue sources, particularly the city's Host Community Fund. With a balance of nearly $4.6 million at the end of 2010, the fund is a tempting target for city officials, who want to use it to help the city pay for a number of expenses and projects. This year, the city earmarked $1.4 million from the fund to help pay for the reconstruction of City Hall. City officials also want to use $500,000 from the fund to jump start the city's Economic …
