Five Spartans Pin Down Wrestling Titles

On Saturday, the Simley High School wrestling team added a handful of individual championships to the Class 2A team title it captured last week.

What a weekend for the Simley High wrestling team. After capturing their fifth consecutive Class 2A championship—and ninth state title in school history—last Thursday, the Spartans took home five individual Class 2A state titles on Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Jake Short, wrestling at 145 pounds, earned his third individual state title, while Kyle Gliva, at 113 pounds, and Nick Wanzek, at 152 pounds, each pinned down his second state championship. First-time title-winners included Juan Torres, at 126 pounds, and Micah Barnes, at 170 pounds. I too, want to thank the coaches at the youth level and through high school. My grandson had a great journey with the simley program from the youth level at 3rd grade to 4 state team championships. I can't say enough for all the coaches who taught Pedro his wrestling prowess. Because of an injury he couldn't wrestle in the individual state tournament but he an opportunity to help the team win …   more ›

Five Athletes to Watch This Winter, Part 1

Keep a close eye on these swimming, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics and hockey players this fall, as they take up leadership roles on their respective teams.

As the winter high school sports season gets underway, these five Simley High School athletes are primed to lead their teams to victory. Check back later this week on Patch to see more athlete profiles. Shauna Horsch A guard on the Simley High School girls basketball team, senior Shauna Horsch spent much of the summer beefing up her already formidable basketball skills, according to Coach Tim Peper. Last year, Horsch was the third-leading scorer on the team, and rounded out her offensive power with plenty of rebounds and steals. After playing on a high level Amateur Athletic Union team and participating in tournaments in North Carolina and Chicago, Peper expects Horsch to be a point producer for the girls team.
