It's Syrup Season! How to Tap Mother Nature for a Sweet Treat

Late this week and into next week could be the prime days of 2013 for syrup enthusiasts looking to tap into a Minnesota tradition.

Know of a syruping event taking place in the coming weeks? Have a sweet trick to keep the sap running? Share them in the comments section! Q: When I think of spring, I think of making maple syrup. What conditions produce the best sap output? A: During March, I watch the long-range weather forecast. When an extended period of warm daytime temperatures are predicted to reach the upper 40s or higher, and nighttime temperatures fall below freezing each night, the trees will break dormancy and sap will flow. Then I need to have my equipment ready to start tapping. In northern Minnesota we rarely get steady weather patterns, so we may get a few days of sap flow followed by none. Warm mild days with little wind that reach well above freezing in …

Fishermen Reminded of Inver Grove Heights's Upcoming Ice House and Shelter Removal Date

After removal dates, shelters may remain on the ice between midnight and one hour before sunrise only when occupied or attended.

From Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources (DNR): Minnesota’s ice fishing shelter removal dates are approaching, and dark houses, fish houses and portables must be off Inver Grove Heights lakes no later than midnight on March 4. Enforcement action will be taken if shelters are left after the deadlines. Those not removing shelters will be prosecuted. Conservation officers may remove the structure and confiscate or destroy it. It is also unlawful to store or leave a shelter at a public access. Anglers are advised to remove shelters earlier, if ice conditions warrant. For border waters, the shelter removal deadlines are: Minnesota-Iowa, Feb. 20; Minnesota-Wisconsin, March 1; Minnesota-North Dakota and South Dakota, March 5; Minnesota-…

Beginning Sept. 6, The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources began updating fall color reports online for Minnesota state parks and recreation areas.

Editor’s Note: As an ode to fall, we encourage Inver Grove Heights Patch users to show off the images you have captured this fall and add them to the gallery on this post. Feel free to add any fall events and activities to the comments.   The leaves are beginning to change color around the state, and staff at the Minnesota state parks are keeping you in the know when it comes to all things fall. IGH City Councilman Flip-Flops, DNR Gun Safety Program Gets Green Light

City Administrator Joe Lynch confirmed that Bill Klein wanted to reconsider his Aug. 13 vote.

In a flip-flop from just two weeks ago, the Inver Grove Heights city council on Monday night approved a DNR-sponsored gun safety program on the Darvan Acres property owned by longtime resident Vance Grannis, Jr. Mayor George Tourville prefaced the discussion by apologizing to the public for this being the fourth reading of the issue and explaining that one of the city council members had reconsidered his or her vote from the Aug. 13 meeting. City Attorney Tim Kuntz explained that, under City of Inver Grove Heights policy, any vote can be reconsidered at the meeting at which it occurred or the next regular meeting. But the motion to reconsider, Kuntz explained, could only come from the councilmembers on the “prevailing side” of the original…

Mayor Tourville and the majority of the City Council are far too busy raising taxes to keep friends and family on the city payroll to be concerned with issues that matter to residence. (could be a coincidence everyone knows everyone, grew up and went to school together) What is Inver Groves plans to reduce spending? As we see property values decline, our taxes keep going up, we know it isn't the …   more ›

Mississippi River Residents Organize, Asian Carp Spotters Wanted

Asian carp could be inevitable in Inver Grove Heights area waters, according to Pioneer Press report.

Regional residents have formed "Friends of Pool 2," a grassroots organization dedicated to enhancing and protecting Pool 2 of the Mississippi River, according to a report by the Pioneer Press. Pool 2 is identified as the area from the Ford Dam to Hastings. Their most urgent concern is the probable invasion of Asian carp into local waters. The DNA of the fish was found just north of Pool 2 in Coon Rapids last winter. Once an Asian carp population establishes itself, it will muscle out other fish and gobble up resources, officials say. Silver carp, known to leap out of the water at the sound of boat motors, also pose a hazard to boaters. Do you spend time on the Mississippi River? You can help The National Parks Service by being a spotter. …

City Considering Firearms Safety Class Inside IGH

The course—if approved—would be taught by DNR 2nd Lieutenant Alex Gutierrez.

The City of Inver Grove Heights is considering allowing DNR 2nd Lieutenant Alex Gutierrez to conduct a firearms safety training course inside city limits. To bring the training to fruition, however, the City Council must first approve the amendment of a public ordinance prohibiting the discharge of a firearm inside Inver Grove Heights.  Inver Grove Heights resident Vance Grannis, Sr.—father of city councilman 'Chip' Grannis—contacted Gutierrez and volunteered to host the training on a portion of his property. Gutierrez explained to councilors Monday night that the training would be open to everyone and would be a "controlled environment with certified firearms safety instructors on site."   Gutierrez also said the classes would be limited …

I thank Mr. Grannis for offering this opportunity. Long overdue--the city leaders should approve this with no issue. I find it interesting---and a demonstration of the need for firearms instruction--Mr Kline is comparing the noise of shotguns with that of a .22 caliber. If he had a clue he would not have even suggested such a comparison.   more ›

Burning Restrictions Start Monday in Inver Grove, Dakota County

Burning will be restricted in many Minnesota counties starting Monday.

Editor's note: The information is from a press release from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will place burning restrictions over much of the state starting Monday, March 26, with more areas included later, due to the melting of snow and winds drying the dead standing grass and brush in open areas. Spring fire restrictions limit open burning until summer green-up occurs. Traditionally, most wildfires in Minnesota occur during April and May. More than 95 percent of these fires are caused by human error. “Because of the high fire incidence during this time period, the DNR proactively initiates burning restrictions,” said DNR Fire Prevention Coordinator Larry Himanga. The …

‘High’ Fire Rating Today, But Rain Possible Tonight

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has put a ‘high’ fire rating on the Twin Cities metropolitan area. That rating could change soon because rain is in the forecast.

Inver Grove Heights and the rest of the Twin Cities metropolitan are in a “high” fire danger rating because of unusually warm temperatures and windy conditions, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. But considering rain is in the forecast starting Sunday night, that fire rating could change soon. While the area’s fire rating is below the “very high” status that most of southern Minnesota was under last week, the conditions still are ripe for blazes. According to the DNR’s statewide fire danger and current burning restrictions webpage, a “high” fire rating means: Fires start easily and spread at a moderate rate. Fires can start from most accidental causes, but with the exception of lightning fires in some areas, the …

Rain Leads to Lowered Fire Threat

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reduced our area's fire threat level from "very high" to "low," thanks to showers that began falling in Inver Grove Heights overnight.

Thanks to overnight and morning rain showers, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reduced its fire danger rating for Inver Grove Heights and the rest of southern Minnesota to “low” Monday morning. The danger rating peaked at “very high” over the weekend, when our area experienced a mixture of strong winds, dry land and warmer-than-average temperatures that is ideal for fires to crop up. Measurable rain began falling in northern Dakota County shortly after midnight, alleviating—at least for the time being—the fire threat. Sunday’s temperature reached a record high of 66 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, the National Weather Service said. The previous record of 61 was set in 1902. A high of 65 was recorded at the …
