Rock Island Swing Bridge Inspires New Novel From Local Author Susan Koefod

Set somewhere south of the Twin Cities, the bridge in "Broken Down" may remind local residents of the Rock Island Swing Bridge that connected Inver Grove Heights and Newport.

Editor's note: The following is a release from local author Susan Koefod.  Arvo Thorson and Christine Ivory are together again in local author Susan Koefod’s second mystery novel, Broken Down.  Koefod—an Inver Grove Heights native—debuted her mystery series in September 2011 with Washed Up, which was praised by Library Journal as "a smashing debut with astute observations and gorgeous prose" and listed as a top 200 pick on Library Journal's debut novel list in October 2011. In Broken Down, the death of a swing bridge operator is clearly no accident and a troubled 15-year-old boy and the aging bridge are both under suspicion for murder. Detective Arvo Thorson is having a breakdown of his own: a drinking binge makes him all too vulnerable to…

The Rock Island Swing Bridge Recreational Pier will be re-opened for use by the public effective Friday, June 29, according to a release from the Inver Grove Heights Parks and Recreation department.     The construction project that closed the pier included the resurfacing of 66th Street, the extension of water and sewer for a future Dakota County Trailhead restroom facility, future off-street parking and trail connections.   A temporary parking lot will be provided on the south side of 66th Street and cars can now be parked on 66th Street. The City asks residents and visitors to not park in the local businesses when visiting the park.   Up-to-date information can be found on the City's website. Questions can be directed to Parks and …

No comments yet? I guess those throngs of people that the bridge is going to draw to the area to benefit local businesses havent read, or don't know about the IGH Patch. Perhaps when we've put another 11/2 million into the whole park they will start showing up. We should start breaking even in a couple of hundred years.   more ›

Stairs For Rock Island Swing Bridge Approved ... Narrowly

Despite being one of the first issues on Monday night's agenda, the Rock Island Swing Bridge stairs proved to be one of the most contentious.

The Inver Grove Heights city council narrowly approved building a set of stairs for the Rock Island Swing Bridge at Monday night's council meeting.  One of the first issues on the agenda, the Swing Bridge stairs proved to be one of the most contentious, garnering 'Yes' votes from only Mayor Tourville and councilors Piekarski-Krech and Madden. The council awarded the building contract to St. Louis Park-based Tree Trust, a nonprofit landscaping company that partners with youth programs to keep costs low. One exchange between Parks & Recreation Director Eric Carlson and councilman Bill Klein demonstrated the tension in the room.  "Personally I'm not wild about these stairs at all," Klein said. "I would rather have seen a trail to a scenic …

I made a point to bike there and ride out to the end on Tuesday. I was just amazed at the number of people. My thanks to Diane for her kind compliment earlier, though the credit really goes to hundreds of people who pitched in to help. As it turns out, it cost about the same to preserve and restore it as it would have cost to tear it down, according to Mayor Tourville.   more ›

City Receives Grant for Heritage Village Park

The Minnesota Historical Society donated $6,990 for the new Heritage Village Park.

The money will be used to conduct historical research about the Rock Island Swing Bridge. A 670 feet long part of the repurposed bridge will be included in the new Heritage Village Park along the Mississippi. According to a statement released by Parks and Recreation Director Eric Carlson yesterday, the city of Inver Grove Heights and the Dakota County Historical Society will conduct research and collect materials from public and private collections, and oral history about the Rock Island Swing Bridge. The site is in the process of being transformed from an abandoned railroad yard into an 80-acre public park. The Bridge span reopened as a recreational pier in 2011. Earlier this month, the city decided to build parking spaces, restrooms, …

I drove down to the bridge last Sunday with my wife only to find that it was closed for the season. The gates going out to the walkway had been repaired more than once and it was no problem to "Tresspass" and squeeze between them so we could walk out to the end and get another good look at that beautiful refinery and the marinas upstream. I see there has been an observation deck built where the …   more ›
