Simley Prom-Goers Get Their Grooves On

Simley High School students celebrate at Prom Saturday

Simley High School students celebrated 2012 Prom in style Saturday evening in the elegant Great Hall in St. Paul. The students marched in the Grand March, danced, listened to music and mostly just enjoyed the evening with their friends.

Looks like a great time was had by all! Parents and former prom-goers, what was your favorite part of prom when you were in high school? The fancy dinner? The dance? The Grand March? Dressing up? For me, shopping for the dress was as much fun as the dance itself - I love an excuse to go shopping, especially for formalwear!   more ›

Simley Baseball Comes Up Short Against Sibley

Despite fighting back to 5-4, Simley couldn't find enough firepower to overcome the Warriors at home.

The Simley baseball team came out cold against Henry Sibley Thursday night to find itself in a 4-1 hole early on. But the Spartans turned things on late and outscored the Warriors 3-1 in the final innings but still managed to lose 5-4.  With base runners at the corners in the top of the fifth inning, a Sibley runner stole second to advance home the Warriors' fifth run of the game.  The sixth inning looked promising after the Simley infield turned a tricky double play on a well-hit ball to retire the Warriors side. Then in the bottom of the inning Simley bats brought in two runs to bring the score to 5-4.  After the Sibley pitcher walked the winning run to first base in the bottom of the seventh inning, Spartans bats failed to deliver.  The…

Simley Senior Wins National Merit Scholarship, Eyes Future In Astrophysics

Avery Garon was one of just 47 Minnesotans to win the award. Designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists.

Simley senior Avery Garon joins 46 other Minnesota high schoolers today in officially receiving a National Merit Scholarship worth $2,500.   The $2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program, according to a release from Illinois-based National Merit Scholarship Corporation. To select scholarship winners, a committee of educators appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; …

Spartans Lacrosse Downed By Holy Family Despite Gutsy Second Half

After giving up just two goals in the first quarter, Simley gave up seven in the second, leading to a 9-3 halftime deficit.

Two goals apiece from junior Kellen Asmundson and sophomore Zach Aten wasn't enough to lift the Spartans boys lacrosse team to victory over Holy Family Catholic High School Monday night.  Falling 16-6 in front of a home crowd, the Spartans struggled to keep pace with the Holy Family juggernaut despite flashes of brilliance in the first, third and fourth quarters. Three-year head coach Garnet Asmundson chalked up the loss to his team's lack of experience.  "We as coaches and players have to base our success on smaller victories besides winning and losing," Asmundson said. "There are only six returning players from last year's team. On top of being young, we're quite inexperienced and it shows at times." Asmundson continued: "(Lacrosse) is a…

Eagle Rank Only the Beginning For Simley Senior

Matt Kadrlik is heading to St. John's University in the Fall to study engineering and participate in football and wrestling.

On Monday, April 16th, 2012, Inver Grove Heights Troop 507 had the privilege of holding a Court of Honor to award the Eagle Rank to troop member Matt Kadrlik. This is the highest rank a young man can attain in Boy Scouts, and is achieved by less than four percent of the boys who begin the program. Twelve years ago, Matt joined Pack 507 out of Pine Bend Elementary, as a first grader. He worked his way through the early Cub Scout ranks into 5th grade, when he achieved the Arrow of Light Award and crossed over into Boy Scout Troop 507. Over the next seven years, Matt advanced through the Boy Scout ranks, while participating in 33 service projects and working on Merit Badges such as Small Boat Sailing, Canoeing, Personal Fitness and …

I think scouting teaches young men invaluable life lessons. I applaud Matt and all the other scouts in IGH. Well done, gentlemen. Right now, it's something that looks great on a resume. But believe me, in 10 years you'll look back and marvel at the things you learned. Scouting will never leave you.   more ›
