Peterson Popcorn, a family business that's sold homemade popcorn and ice cream in St. Paul since 1977, opened an Inver Grove Heights store near Simley High School last week. "What an excellent first few days!" reads a Peterson Facebook post. "We love seeing everybody's smiling faces from around town, what an excellent community of people." Peterson, located near Hometown Meats at 3045 80th St. East, is being run solely by family members for now, though the popcorn store is considering hiring outside help this summer. Inver Grove Heights residents have shown excitement on the store's Facebook page. "Hub & I each got a cone & a bag of 3-way mixed popcorn!" wrote Connie Siebers. Eight teams from Inver Grove Heights participated in the regional competition and three will advance to the state tournament.
Three teams from Inver Grove Heights qualified on Saturday for the Destination Imagination state tournament on April 20 at Champlin Park High School. Destination Imagination is an educational program in which students work together to solve open-ended, off-kilter challenges such as creating a story about the dangers posed by vehicles from the point of view of the vehicles or making a structure entirely from glue and materials chosen from a list. One team, "Fame Hit Us Like a Ton of Bricks," from Simley High School, placed first in their challenge during the regional competition. Congrats to the team's members, Madi Dian, Sophia McFarland, Reanna Persaud, Libby Rettinger, Lindsay Schneider, Lindsay Moynihan and Kira Weikleenget.
Simley swimmer Alec Kandt won the state championship in the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday.
Simley swimmer Alec Kandt won the Section A state championship in the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday. It was the senior’s first individual state championship and the perfect coda to the his four years at Simley. “Since my freshman year, I’ve been fourth, I’ve been third, I’ve been second, and this is finally the year I actually got the win,” he said. “It was a great way to end my high school career.” Kandt took second place in the 100-yard butterfly, sixth place in the team 200-yard Medley Relay and tenth in the team 400 Free Relay. The Simley Boys Swimming and Diving Team placed ninth out of 41 teams in the tournament. “My freshman year, our team went undefeated in a season, and this year was our best record since our undefeated season…
