Short has had an undefeated 41-0 senior year at Simley.
Naming Simley High School senior Jake Short "Wrestler of the Year" must not have been a difficult decision for the Pioneer Press. Looking to win his fourth individual state championship on Saturday, Short is the nation's top-ranked 152-pounder sitting on a 75-match winning streak. Before he enrolls at the University of Minnesota in the fall, Short plans on taking a break from wrestling and trying to reach the state tournament in tennis. "I think I need the break and have earned the time off from wrestling," Short told the Pioneer Press. "I'm a three-sport guy but soon will become a one-sport guy. The International Olympic Committee announced Tuesday it will cut wrestling from the Olympic games, beginning in 2020.
A strong tradition in the Inver Grove Heights community was wrestled down Tuesday, when the International Olympic Committee announced it will cut wrestling from the Olympic games, beginning in 2020. "If you say there are no Olympics, then your dream is gone,” Short said.," said Will Short, Simley High School's athletic director and wrestling coach, told CBS Minnesota. Simley's program has won nine state wrestling championships, and Short told CBS he feels that the Olympic Committee's decision was financially motivated. “I think the IOC is looking at some other sports where they have big-time sponsorships that are going to generate revenue for the Olympics,” he said. Last Tuesday, the Spartans earned their first Classic Suburban Conference game of the season with a 66-51 win over North St. Paul. Simley was led by Sam Stensgard with 20 points. Simley, 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the Classic Suburban Conference, will visit South St. Paul in Tuesday.
