GIRLS BASKETBALL The Simley girls basketball team has won two of its last three games and takes a 3-2 record into Tuesday’s game at Rogers. The Spartans had their two-game win streak snapped Saturday with a 53-51 loss at St. Anthony. Abby Kain had 15 rebounds and Maya Delao dished out five assists for Simley. The defeat was the first in a dual match for the defending state champion Spartans since Dec. 30, 2011, when they fell to Archbishop Moeller (OH) and St. Paris Graham (OH) during The Clash National High School Wrestling Duals in Rochester. The Spartans led at halftime, 27-23, before being outscored by 10 points in the second half. Kylie Brown scored a team-high 16 points  and pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds for Simley. The Spartan girls hockey team has played six matches so far, but the girls basketball, gymnastics, boys hockey and wrestling teams are in action for the first time this week.

Golden Gophers Announce Signings of Jake Short, Nick Wanzek

The University of Minnesota on Monday confirmed that the Simley wrestlers have accepted scholarships to become Golden Gophers.

According to the Minnesota Daily and Gophersports.com, the U announced Monday that Simley’s state champion wrestlers signed their National Letters of Intent during the early signing period and will join Minnesota’s wrestling program next year. Short and Wanzek signed their letters during a ceremony at Simley on Nov. 14. Q&A: Simley's Mark Madigan, Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year

The assistant coach received an award from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

After nine state championships and more than three decades, Simley High School assistant wrestling coach Mark Madigan was, on May 9, named the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s (NWCA) Regional Scholastic Assistant Head Coach of the Year He is currently in the running for the NWCA’s Scholastic National Awards. Patch caught up with Madigan at Inver Grove Heights Middle School, where he teaches math, to discuss his passion for coaching and his history of success.
