The visiting Hudson Raiders scored three goals in a two-minute surge in the third period to defeat Simley 5-3 in boys hockey home opener.
With six minutes left in the second period, the Hudson Raiders had outshot the Simley High School boys hockey team 24-6, yet trailed on the scoreboard 2-0. But Hudson's fortunes turned around when the team scored three goals in a two-minute stretch in the third period en route to a 5-3 boys hockey win over the Spartans on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Community Center. Hudson went from a 0-2 deficit to a commanding 5-2 lead during a 14-minute stretch starting at the end of the second period and lasting into the middle of the third period. Simley head coach Jim Joseph chalked up the defeat to Hudson's deep line-up. "They have a very deep team, a lot of good hockey players, a lot of speed," said Joseph. "I think it was all we could…

Visiting Minnehaha scores goal with just 2:33 to play to tie Simley High in girls hockey 3-all
Simley High School's Spartans outshot and outskated visiting Minnehaha Academy for much of a girls hockey matchup Tuesday night, but in the end settled for a frustrating 3-all tie. The Spartans outshot the visiting Saints 41-16 at Veterans Memorial Community Center Tuesday night. But hard-working Minnehaha goalie Julia Carle only let three of the 41 attempts get past her. The Spartans got off to a slow start, dominated most of the second, third and overtime periods, but couldn't quite land a knockout blow. "We played OK," said Simley head coach Ashley Stewart. "We had no breakdown the first five minutes of the game but their goalie just really—they have a very good goalie. If we could have put the puck away it would have made all the …

Keep a close eye on these swimming, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics and hockey players this fall, as they take up leadership roles on their respective teams.
As the winter high school sports season gets underway, these five Simley High School athletes are primed to lead their teams to victory. Pedro DeLao DeLao's speed on the wrestling mat helped him to a 43-7 record during last year's winter wrestling season, and Coach Will Short hopes to see similar things from this young athlete in the coming months. DeLao, a 2010-2011 state champion in the 119-pound weight class, has matured and grown into a leader on the wrestling team, Short said. He will likely wrestle in the 120-pound weight class this year. "He’s got great character, and he’s a great team guy as well; he cares a lot about the team," Short said. Taylor Floyd Many successful gymnasts begin the sport at a young age. But Simley senior …

Eighth grader Margie Freed was 34th in the girls Class AA race, whlle Simley High senior Max Wellens was 62nd in the boys event

Senior Max Wellens, the first Spartan to compete at state in three decades according to coach Tim Kersey, was 62nd out of 158 runners in the boys Class AA race in 16:42. “Our strategy for Margie was for her to get out and run off the flank of the chase pack,” said Simley head cross country coach Tim Kersey. “She ran a solid first mile. She had a really good start overall and even had some space.” Freed continued to pass runners during the race, an indication the …
