Community Center Serves as Neighborhood Hub

The Veterans Memorial Community Center unites Inver Grove Heights by offering a variety of programming.

The Veterans Memorial Community Center serves to unite a diverse array of Inver Grove Heights residents under one roof. “It’s a widely used building,” said Eric Carlson, director of the Inver Grove Heights Parks and Recreation Department, which runs the center. “It’s a place where neighborhoods come to meet.” Approximately 450,000 people use the community center annually. Veterans Memorial currently has 3,112 members. Each year, 1,200 children are enrolled in swimming lessons alone. The community center consists of three separate structures — the ice arena building, the Army National Guard building and the aquatic fitness center — which are connected, creating one community complex. Mild Weather Impacts IGH Parks and Rec

Attendance is up at the The Grove and for indoor programs, says Recreation Superintendent Tracy Petersen. Numbers at fitness center are down a bit.

This winter’s record warmth and lack of precipitation has impacted the Inver Grove Heights Parks and Recreation Department, Recreation Superintendent Tracy Petersen said. The effects, though, could be considered surprising. Less winter-like weather has prompted more people to visit the city’s indoor pool and water park, better—known as The Grove—and to take part in indoor recreation activities at the Veterans Memorial Community Center, Petersen said. On the flip side, fewer people are using the city’s fitness center. As far as outdoor activities are concerned, Petersen said there has been limited weather-related impact on the department. Holiday on Main Street Scheduled for Dec. 17

The city's annual holiday party will hit Veterans Memorial Community Center on Saturday afternoon.

Live music, face painting, kids games, toy giveaways and a visit from Santa Claus. You can find them all at one place this weekend: The city's Holiday on Main Street party from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Community Center. The event is the capstone of the city's holiday celebrations this weekend, which include trolley rides, a "Skate with Santa" event and more. Admission at Holiday on Main Street is free. City Holds Open House to Discuss Heritage Village Park

The city is interested in receiving your input and feedback regarding Heritage Village Park and the conceptual plans for future park buildings.

Members of the public are invited to attend an architectural open house for Heritage Village Park on Tuesday, Dec. 13. City officials are in the process of creating an architectural style for future buildings in the park and anticipate that one of the buildings will be constructed in 2012 in partnership with Dakota County Parks. The city is interested in receiving your input and feedback regarding Heritage Village Park and the conceptual plans that have been developed for the architecture of the future buildings. State, Regional Veterans Day Ceremonies on Friday

A free community breakfast and Veterans Day ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Community Center.

WHAT: The state's official Veterans Day Program is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11 at Veterans Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights. The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, the Minnesota Commanders’ Task Force and Governor Mark Dayton invite veterans, families, elected officials, and community members to celebrate and honor all veterans who have served this country with bravery. This program was selected by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as the official regional site for the 2011 observance.
