The first fall-season practice day for Spartan sports is Aug. 13.
Summer vacation soon will be over for fall-season athletes at Simley High School. Registration night for Spartan fall sports—cross country, girls tennis, boys and girls soccer, football, girls swimming and diving, and volleyball—is scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, in Simley High’s cafeteria. Then, the following the Monday (Aug. 13), practice begins. According to the Inver Grove Heights Community Schools’ website, the Aug. 7 meeting will open with registration from 5:30 to 6:30. That will be followed by a presentation by athletic director Will Short at 6:30. The Simley High School boys and girls soccer teams both head into postseason play this week after both Spartans squads learned of their seedings and first-round opponents for the Section 4A Tournament on Sunday. Girls Soccer The Simley girls soccer team followed up a 10-5-1 regular season with a No. 2 seed in its 4A tournament. The Spartans earned a first-round bye and at least two home games, beginning with a hosting of either No. 7 Mounds Park Academy or No. 10 St. Paul Como Park at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Spartans competed in one of the largest high school cross-country meets in the nation on Saturday.
Members of the Simley High School cross-country teams took part in one of the largest high school meets in the nation on Saturday as they competed in the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course. Cross-Country Competing in the Maroon Division, the Simley boys cross-country team finished 48th in the Griak Invite, while five Spartans girls also competed. Max Wellens finished sixth overall with a five-kilometer time of 16 minutes, 52 seconds. Following Wellens were: Christian Goettsch (18:49) in 152nd place, T.J. Spartans win their fourth straight match after starting the season 0-5 with a three game sweep of visiting South St. Paul
The Simley High School Spartans continued their winning ways Thursday with a hard-fought Parents Night sweep of visiting South St. Paul in Classic Suburban Conference volleyball at Inver Grove Heights. The Spartans won 25-17, 25-22 and 25-18. Simley (2-3 conference, 4-5 overall) won its fourth straight match after starting the season 0-5. “We played the toughest teams in our conference to start the season, but that made us a better team going into this part of the season,” said varsity coach Mark Kaschke. “We really are enjoying this part of the conference now.” South St. Paul fell to 0-5, 1-7 on the season. “I think we’ve stepped it up a lot,” said senior right hitter Maddy Urness. Spartans compete in a full slate of post-Labor Day contests last week.
Simley High School athletic teams returned to competition following the Labor Day holiday, playing a full schedule against opponents over the first week of school. Girls Soccer Back-to-back Classic Suburban Conference victories at home last week boosted the Simley girls soccer team's record to 4-2-1 this fall. The Spartans blew out Richfield 10-1 last Tuesday before one-upping North St. Paul 3-2 on Thursday. Individual statistics for the North win were not made available. Cody Hazelett Senior Cody Hazelett (6' 3", 205 lbs.) is expected to be a force for the Simley High School Spartans football team this season, regardless of where he lines up. A third-year starter for the Spartans, Hazelett is listed in the roster as a tight end, but in pre-season practice he listed his positions as quarterback, linebacker and some fullback. “He’s big, strong and physical,” said Simley High head football coach Rex King. Hazelett’s preference might be on defense. The 2011 fall sports season has begun for Simley as the Spartans girls tennis and soccer squads commenced their campaigns last week, with several more teams to play their first contests over the next several days. Boys Soccer The Simley boys soccer team emerged from its first week of games without a loss as the Spartans went 2-0-1 in its initial three contests. Following a 1-0 home win over non-conference opponent Hastings last Thursday, the Spartans officially claimed a win and a tie at the St. John's University Tournament over the weekend.
